GUWAHATI: Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma ordered Assam Police special director general GP Singh to rush to Jorhat and investigate the incident in which suspected Nagaland-based miscreants fired at a team led by Assam Mariani MLA Rupjyoti Kurmi along Assam Nagaland borders in Jorhat district on Thursday.

Luckily, the team fled the spot and no one received any serious injuries.

Kurmi along with his two personal security officers, three state police constables, forest department personnel, a group of journalists and villagers went to the Dissoi Valley reserve forest along the Assam-Nagaland borders in the district to inspect an alleged encroachment by miscreants.

Locals have been alleging that illegal encroachers from Nagaland have settled inside Assam territory.

The chief minister’s office (CMO) said, “The CM has expressed serious concern over the incident and ordered a probe. He has asked the special DGP GP Singh to go to the spot and investigate the matter urgently.”

The Congress MLA claimed that the illegal settlers have encroached around a 2 km area of the state’s reserve forest. He informed that at least 15 to 20 rounds were fired by the miscreants when they were on their way to check on the alleged encroached land.

“I have received several complaints about the illegal encroachment by Nagaland-based miscreants and being a local MLA, I have decided to inspect the situation on the ground personally. But when reached the area, the miscreants opened fire on our group and we had to flee the spot,” Kurmi said.

Congress legislative party (CLP) leader Debabrata Saikia said that the state government must act strongly to stop the encroachments from all the neighbouring states.

Saikia said, “Nagaland-based miscreants have chased away our people from our land. Since the chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is also heading the North-East Democratic Alliance (NEDA), he must act to protect our land from the encroachments urgently.”

NEDA is a political coalition led by BJP with its political allies from the northeastern states.
