Guwahati: Meghalaya chief minister Conrad Sangma on Wednesday met Home Secretary of the Ministry of Home Affairs, Ajay Kumar Bhalla, in Delhi to initiate the process for bringing the militant outfit of Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) into peace table.
On February 8, banned outfit HNLC had stated that it was ready for peace talks and that too, without any pre-conditions.
Sangma said, “Following the required process to take forward the peace talks with HNLC, met the Home Secretary of the Ministry of Home Affairs to discuss the same. The Government of Meghalaya is committed to see this through.”
The Meghalaya CM said that his government would work on taking the peace talks with HNLC to a logical conclusion.
The outfit had claimed that it had carried out a bomb blast near Delhi Mistan in Shillong city in January because of non-payment of taxes by the shopkeepers to the outfit.
The banned outfit has been fighting for a sovereign homeland for the tribal Khasi population of Meghalaya.
