BREAKING: ECI Suspends Security Official in Assam EVM Controversy
GUWAHATI: The Election Commission of India (ECI) has suspended a security official in the Assam EVM controversy.
The armed escort officer identified as Luhit Gohain, sub-Inspector of Assam Police (armed branch) of 3rd Assam Police Battalion, Titabor, was suspended for leaving behind the stranded polling party and not ensuring their safe arrival at destination.
The poll panel took the action on the basis of report of the Special Observer over the incident.
The Commission has already suspended four Poll officials including the presiding officer responsible for the lapses.
The poll body has also ordered a re-poll at polling station No 149 in Assam’s Ratabari Assembly Constituency in Karimganj district.
“There doesn’t seem to be any grounds for the change of Returning Officer (RO) as this appears to be an isolated incident, due to negligence and foolishness of Presiding Officer. To ensure credibility, it’s appropriate to order repoll in PS No 149 Indira MV School of LAC 1, Ratabari,” said the report by Special General Observer.
On Thursday, after the second phase of polls concluded, a polled EVM was found to be carried in a private vehicle of a BJP candidate.
