Guwahati: At least five Congress MLAs in Manipur have resigned from their membership of the Manipur Legislative Assembly leading to vacating of their constituency seats.
All of them were from the group of MLAs who had allegedly defied the party whip of attending the floor test of the state government on Monday. They had skipped the one-day special session on Monday leading the of BJP-led N Biren Singh government to win a facile vote of confidence.
Besides Henry Singh who is an MLA from the Wangkhei assembly constituency, Oinam Lukhoi of Wangoi, Md Abdul Nasir of Lilong, Ngamthang Haokip of Saitu, and Ginsuanhau of Singhat had submitted their resignation to the Assembly Speaker.
They were summoned by Speaker Yumnam Khemchand Singh after the assembly session on Monday night and their resignation letters were verified.
Citing an official notification from the Manipur Legislative Assembly, sources said, “Consequent upon the resignation of the following members from the membership of the Manipur Legislative Assembly, the five Assembly Constituencies are lying vacant with effect from the forenoon of Tuesday, 11th August 2020.”
The 60-member House has an effective strength of 53, including the speaker. Four members had been disqualified earlier and three of the BJP resigned sometime back. The ruling coalition had 29 MLAs, including the speaker, while the Congress had 24, of whom eight abstained.
