Guwahati: Assam government has decided to relax the regular curfew timing during Magh Bihu celebration. Though unlike the New Year’s Eve when night curfew was lifted completely, in Bihu the curfew timing has been reduced to felicitate extended movement to people of the state
After the state government has imposed a night curfew from 10 PM to 6 AM in the state owing to the rising Covid19 cases and the possible spread of Omicron virus, many criticized the state government for not relaxing curfew during Bihu like the New Year’s Eve.
On Tuesday, chief minister Himanta Biswa Saram said, “Since on the night of Uruka (Bihu eve) people will go for feasting, we have decided to relax the night curfew for one hour. Also, as people will go to the market on Bihu day early morning to buy fishes and other items, we have decided to end the curfew on that morning at 4 AM.”
According to the National Health Mission (NHM), Assam on Monday reported another major increase in new Covid-19 cases, and registered 2,198 fresh COVID-19 infections. Two COVID-19 related deaths were also reported and the overall positivity percentage went up to 4.49%.
