Breaking: Guwahati Municipality elections to be conducted in February’ 22

Guwahati: The much awaited elections of the Guwahati Municipality Corporation will be conducted on February 2022, after three years delay.

The announcement was made by Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma after attending a meeting in Bongaigaon on Thursday.

This time the elections will be conducted in 64 wards instead of 31 wards unlike in 2013. Before 2013, there were 60 wards in Guwahati after which the wards were combined and the total number changed to 31 wards.

It’s been three years since the term of the GMC council ended but due to Lok Sabha elections, CAA protests and COVID-19 pandemic the elections were postponed several times in the state.

The last GMC council term ended on July 31, 2018, and the councillors were irked at the Assam government for neglecting the elections for long.

CM Sarma has also informed that Deori Autonomous Counil, Thengal-Kachari Autonomous Council elections are going to be held simultaneously with the GMC elections in the state.
