Guwahati, September 13: Uttar Pradesh Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) and Kanpur police today jointly arrested Qamar-uz-Zaman, a suspected cadre of Hizbul Mujahideen who hails from Assam’s Hojai district from Chakeri area of Kanpur on Thursday.
39-year-old Zaman had gone to Kishtwar district in Jammu region of Jammu & Kashmir, more than 3000 km from his home-town to sell clothes last 2013.
According to reports, police had a tip-off regarding an attack during the Ganesh Chaturthi festival (today) following which, they nabbed Zaman.
Zaman came into the security force’s radar last April when a picture ostensibly of him brandishing an AK-47 was released in a popular social networking site by a page that is known for releasing pictures of militants of several outfits in the social media.
According to sources, Zaman has confessed of being involved with the outfit during police interrogation.
After his pictures landed on social media, on request of Assam Police, an enquiry was conducted in Kishtwar district in which, it was found that Zaman had gone missing since 2017.
However, during the interrogation, Zaman has also confessed of taking arms training in the hill areas of Kistwar district.
