Guwahati: Acting on a tip-off, Makum police on Sunday night busted an illegal trade of Asian breed elephants from Arunachal Pradesh.

The police personnel in the midnight hours rescued two male jumbos that were allegedly being transported from Arunachal Pradesh to Orissa.

Speaking to the media, Makum police, Officer in Charge, said, “The elephants were taken into captivity from Lathaor in Arunachal Pradesh’s Namsai and were heading towards Orissa via Assam at around 1.30 am. No documents were recovered during the seizure. Both the elephants have been handed over to the Doomdooma Forest Division.”

It is yet not been confirmed how these two elephants were transported from Arunachal Pradesh to a state like Orissa via Assam without valid documents.  However, the matter will surely come to light with the intervention of the forest department, asserted Makum police officer in charge.
