After an armed man fired at a protest march in Jamia area in south Delhi on January 30th, 2020, another man on February 1st, 2020 fired bullets in Shaheen Bagh area where locals have been camping for over a month against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).

The man has been identified as 24-year-old Kapil Gujjar. He came from the Jasola side and shot in the air, as per media reports. Kapil is said to be a resident of Dallupura. There were no reports of any injury.

Delhi DCP Chinmay Biswal told reporters that the man had resorted to aerial firing. “Police immediately overpowered and caught him,” he said.

While being taken away by police, Kapil chanted Jai Shree Ram and shouted Sirf Hinduon ka raj chalega (only Hindus will rule).

Last week, a youth, who had gone to talk to the protesters at Shaheen Bagh, was seen brandished a country-made pistol. A video of the man is now available on social media. The youth was later whisked away from the protest site.

A video clip of a man, later said to be 17 and a juvenile, brandishing his gun and open firing at the crowd standing meters away from dozens of policemen deployed outside the Jamia Millia University on January 30th, 2020 sent shockwaves across the country.

In the video, the man reportedly shouted Yeh lo azadi (here’s your freedom) and ‘Delhi Police Zindabad (Long live Delhi Police)” and then shot at students at a march. The bullet injured Shadab Farooq, a mass communication department student.

The cops later managed to overpower the man. An FIR under the Arms Act and a case of attempt to murder have been registered against the youth. The Crime Branch of Delhi is now probing the matter.
