BREAKING: NE’s One of the Biggest Wildlife Smuggling Rackets Busted; Huge Seizure
GUWAHATI: In one of the biggest seizures of the pangolin scale in the northeast, the Wildlife Crime Control Bureau (WCCB) in a joint operation with Meghalaya Police and Meghalaya forest department seized around 44.28 Kgs of pangolin scale from Meghalaya’s Ri-Bhoi district recently.
Besides, four live pangolins and other wildlife items like 43 Tokay gecko (all dead) and two elephant tusks were also seized in the operation. At least 10 persons were also arrested in connection to the incident.
WCCB sources said that acting on a tip-off, the joint team raided the residence of one Victorious Masharing from Khlichumsotem village in Ri-Bhoi district on April 19 and seized four live pangolins, 43 Tokay geckos and a large quantity of pangolin scale. Eight persons were apprehended during the operation then.
Subsequently, based on the statement of the arrested accused another operation has been conducted at the Nongpoh area in the same district on April 20 and seized two elephant tusks and arrested two persons.
“As per the statement of accused, they collected all the contraband items locally and closed at the house of Victorious Masharing for last two month and trying to sell someone. A case has been registered at Protection Range, Shillong and all accused have produced before the court at Ri-Bhoi district and send for judicial custody. Further investigation is going on and the investigating team suspected that a big racket is involved in this case,” said WCCB sources.
