BREAKING | New COVID SOP Tomorrow: Guwahati On Close Watch

Guwahati: Assam government likely to come up with new Covid standard operating protocol (SOP) on Thursday, said state health minister Keshab Mahanta on Wednesday.

Though earlier it was believed that the new SOP would come into force from Wednesday, the state disaster management authority (SDMA) was yet to come up with it.

Mahanta said, “Health department has submitted the current Covid status before the state government and chief minister is going to take the call on issuing the new SOP. Since the previous guidelines are affective till today, a new SOP may come up tomorrow.”

Sources said that the fresh SOP got delayed because of the possible change of curfew timings of several districts including Kamrup (metro). Currently, curfew starts in the city from 5 pm.

Earlier, chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that SOP for Guwahati may change if the daily Covid case load goes higher than 250. On Tuesday, the city recorded 258 cases.

Sarma had said, “Since Guwahati is a big city so we want to make changes of SOP only if the numbers go beyond 250. Moreover, not all cases recorded in Guwahati are from here. As many travel to the city, many Covid positive cases from outside the metro districts are recorded here.”

The health minister had said that the Covid19 outbreak in a few vulnerable districts has slightly improved.

The state government was worrying about the situation in Goalpara, Golaghat, Jorhat, Sonitpur, Biswanath, Lakhimpur and Morigaon.

“Except the vulnerable districts, all other districts will be allowed to remain open till 3 pm. Curfew in these districts will start from 4 pm, which will be a relaxation for one hour,” the CM had said.

Two other districts, Sivasagar and Dibrugarh, were also kept under close watch.
