BREAKING: Passenger Ferry Capsized In Majuli; Many Feared Drowned
Guwahati: In a horrific accident, one ferry carrying around 100 passengers including women and children has capsized in Brahmaputra River near the banks of Majuli Island on Wednesday afternoon. The ill fated ferry capsized after it collided with another ferry going on the opposite direction.
The ferry, believed to be the last one for the day, was on its way from Nimatighat to Majuli. Though several passengers managed to swim across to the bank, many others were feared drowned.
Locals said, “The ferry coming from Nimatighat was around 100 meters away from reaching Majuli bank when it collided with the other ferry going on the opposite direction from Majuli. There were some 25-30 motorbikes also on the ferry that drowned completely.”
The national disaster response force (NDRF) teams have already started rescue operation.
