GUWAHATI: The President of India has approved President’s Fire Service Medal for Gallantry posthumously to OIL deceased fire-fighters Late Tikheswar Gohain and Late Durlov Gogoi who laid their lives in the line of duty at Baghjan Well No. 5 blowout in Tinsukia.
On June 9, the two firefighters of PSU major Oil India died in a blaze at its Baghjan blowout well, which has been spewing gas uncontrollably since May 27 and it caught fire on June 9 in Assam’s Tinsukia district. The blowout still continued at the site.
Their bodies were recovered from a nearby pond by an NDRF team on June 10.
Later during the capping of the blowout well, three foreign experts from Singaporean firm Alert Disaster Control received burn injuries while they were removing a spool from the wellhead on July 22.
Though the operation to cap and kill the well continued, the second attempt to cap the damaged gas well failed on August 10.
OIL authority on Saturday said, “The second installment of liquid resin was placed on top of the slip seal to create a temporary ‘pack off of the annulus yesterday. Next activities related to wellhead can be resumed after allowing setting time of a minimum of 24 hours and inspection of the wellhead. Load testing of the Athey Wagon was carried out successfully along with the capping BOP stack and riser. Treatment of well-killing fluid is underway. All efforts are being taken to control the well at the earliest.”
