Guwahati, November 8: Assam Pradesh Congress Committee president and Rajya Sabha MP Ripun Bora was arrested on Thursday while protesting to mark two years of demonetisation.
On November 8, 2016, the Government of India announced the demonetisation of all ₹500 and ₹1000 banknotes of the Mahatma Gandhi series. It also announced the issuance of new ₹500 and ₹2000 banknotes in exchange for the demonetised banknotes.
The Government claimed that the action would curtail the shadow economy and reduce the use of illicit and counterfeit cash to fund illegal activity and terrorism.
Leader of the Opposition in the Assam Assembly Debabrata Saikia, former minister Rockybul Hussain, MP Gaurav Gogoi too were arrested by Panbazar police. The Congress workers gheraoed Reserve Bank of India here.
It may be noted that the Congress party launched a Twitter campaign to protest against the note ban excerise. ‘#DestructionByDemonetisation’, the Congress hastagged its Twitter posts.
