The one-day special session of Assam Assembly started with a stormy note on January 13th, 2020. Soon after the national anthem, Governor Jagdish Mukhi delivered his speech.

The Governor’s speech was disrupted by the opposition Congress and AIUDF MLAs who marched into the well and created a ruckus over the amended Citizenship Amendment Act(CAA). Slogans like ‘will not accept CAA’, ‘Joi Aai Axom’ were also raised inside the House.

The house was adjourned for a few minutes for a tea break. The leader of opposition in Assam assembly, Debabrata Saikia announced that the Congress Legislature Party has exempted themselves from the tea break.

Meanwhile, MLAs and leaders of All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) have staged sit-in demonstrations against CAA, outside the state assembly.

“The government is up in arms against the people who have voiced their opinions against the amended CAA. This is visible with the series of arrests. Assam has become underdeveloped” said former Chief Minister of Assam Tarun Gogoi.

The special session of the assembly was called today for the extension of SC/ST reservation, passed by Parliament in December 2019.
