Supporters Hail Akhil With ‘Gamosa’ At Guwahati’s NIA Court

Akhil has alleged that he was subjected to extreme torture in NIA custody

Hundreds of Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) activists thronged the NIA court premises at Guwahati on January 10th, 2020 to “hail” peasant’s leader Akhil Gogoi.

The KMSS supporters staged a massive protest against Gogoi’s arrested and Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) outside the court premises. The RTI activist and peasants’ leader, Gogoi was produced at the court amidst tight security.

However, a supporter managed to “felicitated” Gogoi with a gamosa as the others chanted ‘Joi Aai Asom’ slogan. The KMSS leader also waved at his supporters.

Gogoi was arrested in Jorhat amid protests over the contentious CAA on December 12th, 2019. The Guwahati police on the following day registered a suo-moto case against Gogoi. Later, on December 14th, 2019, the state government handed over the case to the NIA.

He was sent to 10-day NIA custody on December 17th, 2019 by a special court in Guwahati and was taken to NIA Headquarters in New Delhi. Akhil has been accused of having nexus with Maoist groups. On December 26th, 2019, NIA court sent Gogoi to judicial custody for 14 days.

Akhil has alleged that he was subjected to extreme torture. The Assam Human Rights’ Commission has decided to take suo moto cognizance of media reports of alleged atrocities on the peasants’ leader.
