Breaking | Suspected Hizbul Mujahideen linkman ‘detained’ in Hojai

Guwahati, September 14: A day after the arrest of Qamar-uz-Zaman, a suspected Hizbul Mujahideen linkman was “detained” in Hojai on Friday.

Shahnewaj Alam, son of Jalal Uddin Ahmed, was detained today. It is suspected that Alam was a close associate of Zaman. Alam too hails from Hojai.

On Thursday, the Uttar Pradesh Police, Anti-Terrorist Squad, National Investigation Agency’s, arrested Zaman from Kanpur who was apparently planning attacks during the Ganesh Chaturthi festivities.

Zaman originally hails from Sarak Pilli village in Hojai. Way back in April, he had uploaded his photograph on the social media holding an AK-47, which put the security agencies on alert.

On the other hand, another suspected Hizbul Mujahideen linkman from Hojai, identified as Ajmal Atia, is on the run. It is alleged that Ajmal was “working in close coordination” with Zaman . It is said that he has gone into hiding in Saudi Arab.

Zaman had undergone training in Kishtwar district, Jammu and Kashmir in April 2017, as per security forces. He had also undergone training in Pakistan in 2017 and joined the Hizbul there. He also stayed abroad between 2008 and 2012, as per the Uttar Pradesh police.

Uttar Pradesh police also said that Zaman has sound knowledge of computers and failed his BA third-year examination.
