GUWAHATI: Top doctors first in Assam to take Covid-19 vaccine : Assam began Covid 19 vaccination drive with senior Gauhati medical college hospital (GMCH) medical practitioner Dr Umesh Chandra Sarma given the first dose of the vaccine.
Two other senior doctors -Dhrubajyoti Bora and Ilias Ali too were administered with the vaccine subsequently. All of them were immediately kept for observation after the vaccine doses were administered.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in a televised address before the vaccine rollout, said Covishield and Covaxin being made in India was an example the country’s self-reliance. On Saturday, Prime Minister Modi kicked off the “world’s largest” vaccination campaign as India will inoculate 3 lakh healthcare and frontline workers against Covid-19 on the first day.
Bora after taking the dose said, “Its a historic moment and I feel the privilege to be the first one to get the vaccine. I believe everyone needs to take the vaccine.” In GMCH, some 100 beneficiaries has been readied for the immunisation programme through an app, said a health official
In Assam, the drive was launched formally in GMCH and Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH) by health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal respectively on Saturday.
Sarma said, “The COVID19 vaccine provides immunity against the virus and reduces the risk of infection, but we must still wear a mask , wash our hands with soap and use hand sanitizer and maintain physical distance of 6 ft.”
At least 65 vaccination sites, including seven medical colleges and 24 district hospitals, have been identified in the state. Each site would administer vaccine to 100 persons in a day.
