BREAKING| ‘Udta Assam’: Govt to burn drugs publicly on July 17-18

Guwahati: Assam government has decided to burn all the narcotics items seized during the police crackdown in last two months on July 17 and 18. The chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday informed the state assembly house that the burning would be done to send a strong message to the drug racketeers of the region.

“We got information of the availability of drugs in places that we never imagined. From inside jail to hospitals, to shops and even people disguising as food delivery persons have been circulating drugs in the state. This public burning will be strong message to those in this illegal racket. We want to tell them that their business in the state is over,” Sarma said in the assembly.

Informing that the state has been on its way to become an ‘Udta Assam’, a state high on drugs, the chief minister said that a drug racket worth around Rs 400 crore is active in the state.

He also informed that the public burning of the seized narcotics items will be held in Diphu, Golaghat  on July 17 and in Nagaon and Hojai on July 18.

“In Golaghat 1kilo heroin, 695 kilos of ganja and 2.6lakh contraband tablets, 8 kilos of heroin in Nagaon, 63 grams of heroin in Hojai and some 10 kilos of heroin in Karbi Anglong will be burnt down. I want all the members of the house to be present in these programs to encourage Assam police,” he said.

The chief minister also said that the police have merely seized some 20 percent of the total drugs available in the illegal market.

He said that militant groups except Ulfa (Independent) were involved in the drugs smuggling racket. “Militant groups excluding Ulfa (I) are found to be involved in this cross border racket. They chose drug addicts and use them for their illegal activities. We also seek Myanmar government’s help in checking the drugs menace. A coordinated effort amongst the northeastern states also needs to be built,” Sarma said.

Assam Police have launched a crackdown against illegal drugs racket ever since Sarma has taken charge as the CM. Since May, state police have arrested over 1897 persons including a few drug kingpins while killed one.
