Amid the coronavirus (COVID-19) scare, the Indian Railways has asked the passengers to bring their own blankets for their journey.
The curtains and blankets provided in AC coaches will be immediately withdrawn from service until further orders to avoid the spread of COVID-19.
The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) said that to restrict the spread of coronavirus by contact, the curtains in AC coaches will be removed and blankets will be provided only on demand as these are the most likely source of infection.
“Passengers may carry their own blankets for better hygiene. The bedsheets, pillow covers and hand towel will be provided as usual. The temperature of AC coaches will be adjusted accordingly,” the NFR said in a Facebook post.
The South Eastern Railway, the East Coast Railway, Central and Western Railway have also ordered the withdrawal of blankets and curtains from AC coaches.
The Railways appealed to the people to always clean hands with soap and water and use alcohol-based hand sanitizer to stop the spread of coronavirus.
The Indian Railways is also taking a cue from the Bollywood to highlight the dos and don’ts for passengers to observe and save themselves from the coronavirus.
The railway authorities across the country have started disinfecting local trains as well as long-distance trains.
The Railways has also instructed its personnel to thoroughly the toilets and clean coach fittings like grab handles, door handles, door latches, entry door handles etc with disinfectants as they are touched by thousands of passengers every day.
The railway authorities have launched a drive to create awareness of coronavirus among passengers in local languages at railway stations, trains and hospitals.
