Chief Minister Conrad Sangma hails Income Support Scheme for farmers in Union Budget 2019

Shillong, February 2, 2019

Chief Minister Conrad Sangma hailing the interim budget presented in the Parliament on February 1st, 2019, said that the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi is the most striking proposals in the budget.

Under the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi, Rs 6,000 per year will be transferred directly to the bank accounts of farmers with less than 2 hectares land, in three instalments.

Sangma said, “This scheme is welcoming as in Meghalaya, 96 per cent of the farmers hold land below two hectares and therefore, they will be eligible to take the support of this. This scheme will, in fact, benefit the entire Northeastern region farmers.”

He also praised the creation of a separate department of fisheries and said that since the whole Northeastern region is water-rich, it is necessary to invest more resources to the fisheries sector to reduce the dependency on imported fish.
