    CAA Protests: Hundreds Detained, Internet Suspended In Parts Of Delhi. 10 Points

    The wave of protests over the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, which was started in Assam, rocked the national capital – Delhi resulting in heavy damage of public properties on December 19th, 2019 also. Hundreds of protestors were detained from different parts of Delhi.

    Section 144 was imposed in the protest hit areas. Internet services, SMS services and voice calls were suspended in some parts of Delhi.

    Here are 10 points

    • Over 100 students from Hyderabad Central University (HCU) were detained by police ahead of their protest march against the act and the NRC in Hyderabad.
    • Historian Ramchandra Guha was detained by the Bengaluru police while Swaraj India National President Yogendra Yadav was detained by the Delhi Police at Red Fort and former Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) student and activist Umar Khalid was also detained by police near Red Fort. Left leaders D Raja, Sitaram Yechury, Nilotpal Basu, and Brinda Karat were also detained at Mandi House
    • Delhi Police said that permissions for the protest from Mandi House to Jantar Mantar and from Lal Quila to Shaheed Bhagat Singh Park (ITO) were not granted.
    • Internet services, SMS services and voice calls were suspended in parts of Delhi following the massive protest against the Act
    • Bollywood actor Priyanka Chopra says violence against peaceful protesters is “wrong”
    • A total of 17 metro station were shut down in Delhi
    • Violent protests broke out in Lucknow against the new law when a mob pelted stones and torched vehicles parked outside a police post. Police used tear gas shells
    • Karnataka witnessed massive protest against the act. Section 144 imposed in protest hit areas.
    • The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Delhi has issued a memorandum to its staff, faculty, resident doctors, nurses and students, directing them not to hold any dharna/ protest/ strike at, in or around AIIMS
    • Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal appealed the people to maintain peace while the West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee said that the government is scared of students.
