GUWAHATI: Paresh Baruah led Ulfa (independent) faction asked Assam government to call off the much-awaited Durga Puja celebration owing to the COVID 19 outbreak in the state.
The hardliner faction opposed any move to celebrate the Durga Puja festivities this year saying that while the state government had called off Assam’s prime celebration of Bihu festivities keeping the COVID 19 situation in mind, then Durga Puja festivities too should not be an exception.
“Assamese society is not driven by religious sentiments. Assam government’s move to allow Durga Puja festivities may only be termed as its attempt to please the ‘Hindutva’ agenda of the BJP government. We appeal the state government not to push the people of the state in danger for its religious agenda,” said Arunodoy Asom, in an email statement.
Earlier, several Assam ministers have mentioned that the people of the state may be able to organize the Durga Puja celebration if the COVID 19 situation improves.
