One of the five camels which were rescued by the police ahead of the Bakrid died in the Dhula Police Sation in Mangaldoi of Assam’s Darrang district on August 27th, 2019.
It may be mentioned here that the police were waiting for the court’s go-ahead before sending them to Rajasthan when one of the camels died. The camels were rescued from Tangni Weekly Market in the Darrang district on August 10th, 2019. They were allegedly brought to the market illegally for slaughtering.
“I am constantly working towards the repatriation of the camels safely to their home state. It’s unfortunate that we don’t have specialised doctors for camels in Assam,” informed Sujeet Choudhury, a member of the Animal Welfare Board of India, Rajasthan.
“The trader from whom the police seized the camels had approached the court seeking their custody. However, we challenged it seeking to hand over the camels to the Animal Welfare Board of India. We are waiting for the final court verdict which is expected to come on August 30th, 2019,” said Abhijit Kakoti, Officer-in-Charge of Dhula Police Station.
The Rajasthan government had passed the Rajasthan Camel (Prohibition of Slaughter and Regulation of Temporary Migration or Export) Bill in 2015 which banned the slaughter and transportation of the animal to other states.
