Candidates with criminal charges are to contest in upcoming Tripura polls

Agartala, February 11: The Tripura Election Watch and Association for Democratic Reforms have analyzed the self- sworn affidavits of all 297 candidates from Tripura 2018 Elections and released a report on Saturday.

According to the reports, out of the total 297 candidates, 22 (7%) candidates have declared criminal cases against them. Out of the 22 candidates, 17 candidates have serious criminal cases.

Reportedly, one Independent candidate identified to be Martujuddin Chowdhury who is contesting from Bagbasa constituency has criminal charges of murder.

Also, 6 other candidates have got charges of attempt to murder.

It may be mentioned that as per the reports, 11 out of 51 candidates from BJP, 4 out of 59 candidates of INC, 2 out of 57 candidates of CPI(M), 2 out of 9 candidates from IPFT and 1 out of 24 candidates from TMC have the charges of different criminal cases against them.

Apart from this, reports also state that out of the total 297 candidates, 35 (12%) are crorepatis according to their financial background.

As per education qualifications is concerned, candidates contesting 2018 Tripura election, 173 (58%) candidates have declared their educational qualification to be under metric, while 121 (41%) candidates have declared themselves as graduate and above. Reportedly, one candidate is illiterate, while 2 others are diploma holders.
