Cashew Nut Trader From Assam Kidnapped In Meghalaya’s Garo Hills

A group of unidentified miscreants abducted a cashew nut trader from Assam while he was on his way to the weekly market at Dalu village in West Garo Hills district of Meghalaya on May 31st, 2019.

As per information available, the trader identified as Samirul Islam (36) was abducted along with Rs 5 lakh cash. He is a resident of Hatsingimari, Sonapur in Dhubri district of Assam.

“For many years now, Islam buys cashew nuts from Meghalaya and sells in Assam. Yesterday, he was kidnapped along with cash amounting to lakhs. We demand his early release,” said a family member.

An FIR has been lodged with Meghalaya Police, family members informed. It may be mentioned that in the past too, traders from Assam were kidnapped in Garo Hills.

In the month of April, driver Nur Aziz and his betel nut trader friend Rohidul Islam were found dead after being kidnapped in West Garo Hills. Aziz and Islam hailed from Jhowdanga in Mankachar town located in South Salmara-Mankachar district of Assam. Aziz’s body was recovered in Kherapara village and Islam’s body was found in Ontapara under Dalu Police Station, West Garo Hills district of Meghalaya.
