Centre may stop aid to Bru refugee camps in Tripura after Jan 15

Agartala, January 10: The Central government may stop the ration supplies and cash dole to the over 32,000 Bru refugees after January 15.

“We have received instructions to stop the free aid. Also as there is no fresh instruction, the previous order will stand. Cash dole and relief supplies will continue till January 15, if there are no new orders, supplies will be halted,” said Kanchanpur Sub-Divisional Magistrate Abhedananda Baidya.

It may be mentioned that the eighth phase of repatriation of Bru refugees started from August 25, 2018. However, the repatriation package was rejected by most of the refugees, saying it was ‘insufficient’.

The Bru refugees who fled from Mizoram have been sheltered in six transit camps in Tripura.

All the relief supplies were halted by the Ministry of Home Affairs since October 1 last year after the repatriation failed.

The supplies resumed three weeks later owing to severe food crisis in the camps.
