Guwahati: At least Rs 648.80 crore was released to Assam by Centre as disaster assistance in 2022-23, said union minister of state for home Nityanand Rai in Rajya Sabha on Wednesday.

This year, some 199 people have already died in natural disaster like flood and landslide in the state since April. The minister said that floods and landslides have caused extensive damage in various districts in Assam.

He added that the central government has constituted an Inter Ministerial Central Team (IMCT) on May 19, 2022 for on the spot assessment of damage caused by the deluge, even before the state’s request.

He informed that the IMCT visited Assam from May 26 to May 29 and for the second time from June 30 to July 3.

“The Centre has released both the installments of the state disaster response fund of the year 2022-23, totaling Rs 648.80 crore, in advance, to help Assam government to provide relief to the affected people,” he said replying to a written question.
