Goalpara, September 12: The police on Wednesday cracked down on the agitators during 12-hour chakka bandh by firing rubber bullets to disperse them.
Demanding an autonomous council for the community in the state, seven Garo organisations – Garo National Council (GNC), Garo National Union (GNU), Garo Gaon Bura Santha, Garo Sahitya Sabha, Garo Mahila Parishad, Youth Parishad and All Achik Youth Federation – observed the Chakka Bandh on Wednesday.
The bandh supporters pelted stones at the vehicles on NH-37, at Paharkata under Agia Police Station damaging the glasses of several vehicles. As the police tried to pacify the agitators, they in return pelted stones aiming towards the police personnel and vehicles. The police had to resort to rubber bullet firing to disperse the protesters.
“We had to resort to rubber bullet firing to disperse the aggressive and unruly agitators who were continuously pelting stones,” said Amitava Sinha, Superintendent of Police, Goalpara.
The police detained seventeen persons under three police stations – Agia, Krishnai and Dudhnoi. “We have detained seventeen persons who were trying to obstruct the movement of the vehicles,” he added.
