Firebrand peasant leader Akhil Gogoi on February 2nd, 2019 urged the people of Assam to stage protests during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the state next week.
Gogoi along with the representatives of 70 indigenous groups met the national opposition parties over the much-debated Citizenship (Amendment) Bill. Gogoi also spoke to the leadership of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIMDK) and Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) regarding the Bill.
“Today, we met Samajwadi Party general secretary and Rajya Sabha member Ram Gopal Yadav and Aam Aadmi Party lawmaker Sanjay Singh to discuss the Bill. All the leaders assured to support our movement and opposed the Bill. They assured us to oppose the Bill at the Rajya Sabha,” he said while addressing the media persons here.
He added, “Modi is likely to visit Assam on February 8th or 9th, 2019. The people should protest Modi’s Assam visit. The KMSS along with other protesting bodies will observe the day of Modi’s visit as a ‘black day’.”
Gogoi further informed that delegation would meet Congress president Rahul Gandhi on February 4th, 2019 to discuss the Bill.
