Guwahati, January 9: Former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi rebuked the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) over the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 and said that the process of National Register of Citizens (NRC) has turned futile with the passage of the Bill.

It may be mentioned that the Assam government released the second and final draft of NRC on July 30, 2018. 2,89, 83,677 persons were found eligible out of 3,29,91,384 applicants in the final draft of the NRC. Of these, 37,59,630 names have been rejected and the remaining 2,48,077 are on hold. The first draft was released on December 31 (midnight), 2017.

He said, “The centres for the NRC should be shut down as they are of no use now. The BJP is now in favour of illegal immigrants from Bangladesh by passing the Citizenship Bill.”

Speaking about Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, he said, “Tomorrow he might join the Congress party if we come to power in 2019 Lok Sabha elections.”

He further stated that the AASU made a big mistake by conferring the tag of ‘Jatiya Nayak’ to Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal.

It may be noted that the AASU had conferred the ‘Jatiya Nayak’ title on the then member of Lok Sabha Sonowal when the Supreme Court struck down the Illegal Migrants (Determination by Tribunal) (IMDT) Act in 2005 as a verdict of the Sarbananda Sonowal vs Union of India Case.
