Agitators clashed with the police, blocked national highways, burnt tyres and damaged vehicles in Assam on December 9th, 2019 during a 48-hour bandh called by the All Moran Students’ Union (AMSU) to protest against the controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Bill.
The anti-Bill activists clashed with the police in Dibrugarh and Guwahati, prompting the security forces to resort to lathi-charge to disperse the protestors. Vehicles were damaged by agitators in the early morning hours at Khanapara, Guwahati.
Opposition Congress, the All Assam Students’ Union, All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) and the Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) among others are also supporting the bandh.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah on December 9th, 2019 will introduce the Bill in the Lok Sabha. The Bill that seeks to grant Indian citizenship to non-Muslim refugees from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan escaping religious persecution there has triggered widespread protests in Assam.
The Bill will be tabled at around 10 am and later it will be taken up for discussion and passage, according to the Lok Sabha’s List of Business for December 9th, 2019.
