Citizenship Bill | FIR filed against Barak Valley students’ leader for threatening Assamese students in Silchar

Guwahati, January 11: The Durnitibirudhi Oikya Mancha has registered an FIR against senior advocate of the Gauhati High Court and founder president of All Cachar-Karimganj-Hailakandi Students’ Association (ACKHSA), Pradip Dutta Roy.

Roy on Friday had threatened the Assamese students studying at the Assam University, Silchar for protesting against the controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016.

The FIR has been filed at Golaghat Police Station.

It may be mentioned that a group of Assamese students had taken out a candlelight vigil to protest against the Bill on Wednesday.

The Citizenship Bill was passed at the Lok Sabha on Tuesday.

The Bill was stalled in the Rajya Sabha following strong opposition from the Congress along with other parties.

The Citizenship Bill was introduced in the Lok Sabha in 2016 to amend the Citizenship Act, 1955. The Bill amends the Citizenship Act, 1955 to make illegal migrants who are Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis and Christians from Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan, eligible for citizenship.
