    Citizenship Bill: Situation Tense As Protesters, Police Clash In Guwahati

    The Guwahati police resorted to blank firing, lathi-charge, tear gas shelling as protests intensified against the Bill

    Uneasy situation prevailed in Guwahati city as shutters of shops, business establishments were pulled down in the afternoon hours of December 11th, 2019. Large parts of the state today simmered with protests by students’ unions and left-democratic organisations against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill including Guwahati city.

    The Guwahati police resorted to blank firing, lathi-charge, tear gas shelling as protests intensified against the Bill.

    Scores of students of city colleges like Handique College, Cotton University, activities of students’ bodies and civil organisation hit the streets to protest against the Bill. The protesting students broke the barricade at ABC point, clashed with the police as they marched towards the Janata Bhawan.

    The protestors also burnt tyres on GS Road as ‘Joi aai Asom’ rent in the air. Anticipating untoward situation, the traders shut their shops and traffic came to a standstill on many roads in the city.

    The Bill was tabled in the Rajya Sabha on December 11th, 2019 by Union Home Minister Amit Shah amid strong protest by the opposition leaders.
