The Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, which was scheduled to be tabled in the Upper House of the Parliament – Rajya Sabha on February 12th, 2019, and the controversial Constitution (Scheduled Tribes) Order (Amendment) Bill, 2019 are likely to be tabled in the Rajya Sabha on February 13th, 2019.
The Citizenship (Amendment) Bill remained pending in the house as the session of the house was adjourned for the day.
Moreover, the session of the Rajya Sabha has been extended till February 15th, 2019. The bill was passed by the Lok Sabha on January 8th, 2019 but the Rajya Sabha rejected it on January 9th, 2019.
It may be mentioned that the entire Northeast region particularly Assam has witnessed massive protests and agitations over the years against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill and demanding identification and deportation of illegal migrants by implementing the historic 1985 Assam Accord.
Most of the political parties and organizations representing various ethnic groups protested in all possible forms and urged the Central government as well as leaders of other political parties to scrap the vexatious bill for the greater cause of indigenous people of the Northeastern states.
