Shillong, February 14, 2019

Around 5 people sustained severe injuries on February 13th, 2019, after they were beaten up for losing control and ended creating a ruckus in Rynjah during a victory rally organized by the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) to hail the lapse of the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 in the Rajya Sabha.

The Bill lapsed on February 13th, 2019 after the Rajya Sabha adjourned sine die on the last day of the Budget session and the last parliamentary session before the Lok Sabha polls.  The Rajya Sabha Chairman and Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu adjourned the House sine die on February 13th, 2019. The House sat in 18 sessions since June 2014, since the National Democratic Alliance (NDA)’s tenure began.

As per media reports, some of them pelted stones and vandalised a few shops of non-tribals in Rynjah and RR colony which later followed into a scuffle among the group and the locals.

According to police, the five persons were admitted to a hospital and an inquiry has been launched into the matter. The police are yet to make an arrest in connection with the matter.

It may be mentioned, as the Rajya Sabha failed to pass the Bill on February 13th, 2019, to bring the Bill on the fore it needs to be cleared by the next Lok Sabha(LS) again. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government at the Centre has been pitching for the early passage of the legislation.
