Citizenship bill will be fundamental issue for Congress in LS election: Ripun Borah

Guwahati, January 20: Assam Congress president Ripun Borah on Sunday said that the contentious Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 issue will be the fundamental issue for party in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.
“The fundamental issue will be the Citizenship Bill since the Bill would jeopardize the identity of the indigenous people of the state. The Bill is unconstitutional and it violates the secular principle of the Indian Constitution,” Borah said.
While reiterating the party’s firm opposition to the Bill, Borah alleged, “The BJP has spread lies in the state on the Bill issue.”
Moreover, the Congress president announced a series of agitations across the state against the Bill from January 21 – 31.
Borah also slammed the BJP over the Constitution (Scheduled Tribes) Order (Amendment) Bill, 2019 that seeks to grant ST status to the six communities of the state and alleged that “the saffron party has been doing the divide and rule policy”.
