Guwahati, January 10: Assam Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 would “protect” the indigenous people of the state and would prevent the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) from controlling the state.
“The bill is also needed because there is a secessionist movement in Assam that threatens to lead to the state becoming part of Pakistan,” Sarma said, as quoted by the India Today.
The minister further said, “Now, the Muslim League is not there, but there are demographic interventions taking place in line with the 1947 thinking. Even the Supreme Court has expressed fears that a demographic intervention challenging the sovereignty of India is taking place in Assam.”
Sarma, as quoted in the report, described the AIUDF led by Badruddin Ajmal as the “enemy of Assam”.
“Ajmal may be an Indian citizen but he is against my culture,” Sarma said.
