Guwahati, November 16: Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal today inaugurated All India Brahmaputra Junior and Senior Open Squash Championship 2017 at R.G. Baruah Sports Complex, Nehru Stadium.
The four-day event is being organised by the Assam Squash Rackets Association and the event will witness the participation of 10 states with 155 players vying in 8 categories.
Declaring the Championship open, Chief Minister Sonowal said that Assam being a land where Squash is sparsely played, the event would open up new vistas for the game to gain popularity in the state. He said, “The ongoing Squash Championship is yet another sporting event which has the potential of transforming State government’s bid in making Guwahati as the sports capital of the country”.
Sonowal advocated for public-private participation for adequate infrastructure for the promotion of squash and other sports in the state. He also said that the Squash Championship being held in the city would help in getting more patronage for the game in Assam.
Sonowal also said that the present Governments at the Centre as well as in the State have accorded a lot of importance on sports and said that ‘Khelo India’ a national programme for development of sports scheme has been conceived of and designed for promoting and popularising sports and enabling the country for gaining more medals in international events.
President of Assam Squash Rackets Association and MLA Shiladitya Deb, its Secretary Sudhir Misra, Chief Minister’s legal adviser Shantanu Bharali, member secretary State Level Advisory Committee for Students and Youth Welfare, Assam, Lakhya Konwar, Chairman Assam State Film Finance Development Corporation Jatin Bora and a host of personalities belonging to sports were present on the occasion.
