Record-breaking Mirabai Chanu bags gold at Commonwealth Games

Guwahati: Star weightlifter Mirabai Chanu secured a gold medal in the women’s 49kg weightlifting final at the Commonwealth Games 2022 on Saturday.

Chanu smashed the Commonwealth and CWG record in snatch in a stunning performance.

She lifted 84kg (snatch) in her opening attempt and went on to lift 88kg in her second.

The Olympic silver medallist, in her third attempt of 90kg couldn’t pull it off and was unsuccessful.

Meanwhile, the former world champion ended with a total lift of 201kg (88kg+113kg), which is far from her personal best.

She started the clean and jerk round with a 109kg lift and followed it up with 113kg, in which she holds the world record (119kg).

Mauritian weightlifter Marie Hanitra Roilya Ranaivosoa 172kg (76kg+96kg) won the silver, while Hannah Kaminski of Canada 171 kg (74kg+97kg) also finished on the podium.

Earlier in the day, weightlifter Sanket Sargar clinched a silver medal in the men’s 55kg category.

Gururaja Poojary then secured a bronze in the men’s 61 kg finals.
