Cong, AIUDF Attack Govt Over NRC, CAB; Walk Out Of Assam Assembly

The first day of the winter session of Assam Legislative Assembly on November 28th, 2019 witnessed a pandemonium with opposition parties Congress, All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) staging noisy protest over the controversial Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB) and National Register of Citizens (NRC).

Both the parties demanded the cancellation of the Question Hour and holding a discussion on the NRC and CAB. Later, both the parties staged a walkout from the Assembly session.

Holding placards like ‘Stop scrapping of NRC’, ‘Follow the Assam Accord’, ‘CAB is against the constitution’, the leaders of the opposition parties staged a protest and expressed their displeasure against both the issues.

It is reported that the first day of the session will have government business beginning with the Oath of Affirmation by the newly elected members which will be followed by Question Hour.

The four newly-elected MLAs at the byelection — Bijoy Malakar (Ratabari), Rajen Borthakur (Rangapara), Nandita Handique (Sonari) and Rafiqul Islam (Jania) will take the oath of office on November 28th, 2019.

Private Member’s Business with Bills, Resolutions, Special Motion and Motions will be tabled in the session on November 29th, 2019. Voting and passing of supplementary demand and supplementary appropriation for 2019-2020, followed by Introduction, consideration and passing of Assam Appropriation Bill, 2019 will take place in the session on the third day on November 30th, 2019.

On the other hand, Congress MLA from Barak Valley, Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha and Mariani MLA Rupjyoti Kurmi also staged a sit-in demonstration holding placards. While Dey protested against the NRC, Kurmi protested against the shutdown of two tea estates.
