Cong MLA Abdul Khaleque asks CM Sonowal to quit BJP, says will support him as Chief Minister

Guwahati, January 12: Congress MLA of Jania Abdul Khaleque on Saturday asked Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal to quit the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

“Sonowal should quit the BJP along with atleast 40 MLAs. He (Sonowal) can still continue to remain as the chief minister, the Congress will support him,” said Khaleque.

Sonowal has been slammed by the opposition parties and local indigenous bodies for “remaining silent” on the controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016.

Statewide protests are going on across the state ever since the Bill was passed by the Lok Sabha.

“Let Sonowal quit the BJP…we will do the rest. The Congress will support an alternative government,” he added.

On the other hand, Congress leader and leader of the opposition Assam Legislative Assembly Debabrata Saikia also stressed on an “alternative government”.

Khaleque also “dared” Sonowal and State Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to seek fresh mandate.

“If they (Sonowal and Sarma) have courage…they should seek people’s mandate now. If Sonowal has courage, he should quit the BJP but he lacks courage. He is not a ‘Jatiya Nayak’ (national hero) rather a ‘Jatiya Kapurush’ (national coward),” he said.
