GUWAHATI: Congress MLA Sherman Ali Ahmed will be put behind bars, said Assam education minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday as the latter reacted to Ahmed’s remarks in the light of the ongoing ‘Miya museum’ controversy in the state.
Sarma said that Ali will be jailed if BJP comes back to power in Dispur.
The Congress leader has allegedly remarked that ‘lungi’, a wrapper kind of clothing for men, would be placed in the Srimanta Sankardeva Kalakshetra, Guwahati in the proposed Miya museum.
The minister said, “Lungi is like undergarment and how can a pubic representative stoop so low and defame Kalakshetra. The Srimanta Sankardeva Kalakshetra is a cultural centre set up after Assam’s reformer Srimanta Sankardeva.”
He added that Ali must need to apologize.
“BJP is not against the Assamese Muslims but has taken measures to preserve the culture and heritage of the Assamese Muslims. But such kind of remarks is a crime,” Sarma added.
The minister added that Ali won’t be arrested now as Ali may take advantage of the situation in garnering vote bank politics.
