Cops fire tear gas shells as violence erupts at Manipur University

Guwahati/Imphal, August 8: Police had to fire tear gas shells and mock bombs to disperse a crowd after a clash had broken out between the protesting students and group people that demanded resumption of classes at the Manipur University.

It may be mentioned that a prohibitory order under Section 144 CrPC had been in force since July 25 in Imphal West district.

The students, teachers and staff members of the varsity have boycotted academic activities demanding the removal of the vice-chancellor AP Pandey over allegations of administrative negligence and financial irregularities.

Police said that though the Imphal West district administration prevented demonstrations in and around the university, the agitators, after the altercation with a group of people, tried to take out a rally from the main gate of the institute.

The Manipur University Students’ Union said that four students have sustained injuries in the clash. However, the claim was refuted by the police officers.
