Coronavirus Pandemic: Uncertainty Looms Over IPL Matches In Guwahati

The IPL 2020 season is scheduled to kick-start from March 29th, 2020 with Chennai Super Kings taking on Mumba Indians

Uncertainty looms over Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 in the wake of the coronavirus (COVID-19) spread in India.

India on March 11th, 2020 said it will suspend nearly all ordinary travel visas till April 15th, 2020 to prevent further spread of the coronavirus. The order will come into force from 1200 GMT, March 13th, 2020.

The IPL 2020 is likely to be cancelled or postponed, as per several media reports. In both the cases, cancelling or postponing the date of the IPL, will mean a big blow to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), media and digital right holders Star Network, sponsors, among others.

For the first time in the Northeast, two home games of the Rajasthan Royals (RR) are scheduled to be played at the Barsapara Stadium in Guwahati in April.

The RR is scheduled to play Delhi Capitals and Kolkata Knight Riders on April 5th and April 9th, 2020 respectively in Guwahati. The RR boys also underwent three-day training at the Barsapara Stadium last month.

BCCI president Sourav Ganguly has reportedly expressed confidence that there is no threat to the IPL 2020 due to the coronavirus. However, the BCCI called an IPL Governing Council meeting on March 14th, 2020. This meeting will decide the fate of the IPL 2020.

The IPL 2020 season is scheduled to kick-start from March 29th, 2020 with Chennai Super Kings taking on Mumba Indians. The much-awaited IPL-13 with over four dozen matches will continue till May 24 at various locations across the country.

As per several media reports, the league games at ‘high-risk centres’ may be played in empty stadiums.

The spread of the novel coronavirus is now a pandemic, officials at the World Health Organization said on March 11th, 2020.
