GUWAHATI: The Gauhati High Court has asked the chancellor of Gauhati University (GU), Dibrugarh University (DU), Tezpur University (TU) and Assam Agriculture University (AAU) to address the complaints of alleged anomalies of funds in the implementation of various projects in their varsities and take necessary action.
Governor of Assam is the chancellor of all universities in the state.
The high court direction came after an NGO, Amguri Naba Nirman Samity (ANNS) moved the court raising an issue of corruption in the four Universities.
The NGO had moved the court based on CAG reports and other RTI report. “The allegation of corruption raised by the present petitioner is based upon a report by the Comptroller and Auditor General of India, which the petitioner had obtained under the Right to Information Act, which is also annexed with the writ petition,” the court in its order said.
Though the court did not reply on the merit of the case, has directed the University authorities to first look into the matter.
“We do not say anything on the merits of the case but, considering that these are all autonomous bodies, in case there is such allegation, it would be only just and fair if the petitioner first approaches the chancellor of the concerned Universalities with detailed representations as we expect the chancellor to take a decision on those representations,” said the court adding that in case the grievance of the petitioner was not addressed or he is not satisfied with the disposal of the representations, the petitioner would be at liberty to come before the high court again.
The court direction came at a time when an alleged corruption in DU has been rocking the state forcing the Governor of Assam to set up a probe committee. Several top DU officials were suspended already.
