    Cotton Students Ring In New Year With Anti-Citizenship Act Slogans

    The Assam Students Union kick-started the first day of 2020 by staging a hunger strike in front of the main entrance of the Cotton University(CU) continuing their demand for withdrawal of the newly enacted Citizenship Amendment Act(CAA).

    The students of CU were joined by Gauhati University, Dibrugarh University and Tezpur Central University respectively. The students said that they will not accept the “anti-Assam” act at any cost and will continue to show their resentment against the Act.

    On December 21st, 2019 on the lines of Greta Thunberg’s Fridays for Future (FFF) movement, the students of the CU launched a protest campaign ‘Saturday Against CAA’ to oppose the new Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019 (CAA).

    On the other hand, the All Assam Law Students’ Union(AALSU) staged a protest at Guwahati Club demanding the withdrawal of CAA and release of Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti(KMSS) leaders Akhil Gogoi, Dharjya Konwar and Bir Lachit Xena leader Shrinkhal Chaliha.

    The AALSU was joined by Cotton University Students’ Union(CUSU), B Barooah College Students’ Union, Bishnu Ram Medhi Government Law College Union at Guwahati Club.

    It may be mentioned that a court of National Investigation Agency(NIA) on December 26th, 2019, sent the KMSS chief and the peasants’ leader Akhil Gogoi to judicial custody for 14 days. A number of students group, civil organizations have been demanding the release of Gogoi.

    Shrinkhal who was arrested in Dibrugarh on December 23rd, 2019 was sent to nine-day judicial custody by the court on December 28th, 2019 and shifted to Barpeta District Jail on December 29th, 2019.
