GUWAHATI: Though lately, the revelation of a prominent couple’s inhuman act allegedly committed upon a minor has sparked a wave of anger and criticism among the conscious citizens of the state since Monday last.
Allegedly, a doctor from Assam Medical College & Hospital (AMCH) poured boiling water on a minor at Milan Nagar area in Upper Assam’s Dibrugarh town. The victim, a 12-year-old, had been working as a domestic worker in the residence of Dr Siddhi Prasad Deori. Dr Deori’s wife, Mitali Konwar, is the principal of Moran College.
Talking to Time8, Dibrugarh district’s superintendent of police Prateek Thube said, “One of the accused is a 65-year-old doctor. We are yet to confirm his association with the Assam Medical College & Hospital. The alleged incident occurred days back. However, it was reported only on Monday. Some conscious citizen reported the incident to the immediate police station as well as to a child protection committee. Accordingly a case was registered by the officer in-charge. No one so arrested so far. We are examining the case.”
According to SP Thube, the minor is out of danger now. The child has been living with Dr Deori and his wife Mitali Konwar for the last one year.
According to a source, the minor was brought from somewhere in Jorhat district for domestic works.
Taking cognizance of the incident, Assam State Commission For Protection Of Child Rights, in its official statement said, “The Commission has taken cognizance of the case, u/s 13 of the CPCR Act, 2005, and has issued recommendations to the Police administration to register a case u/s 75, 79 of JJ Act, 2015 and u/s 14 of CALPR Act, 1986 along with IPC and arrest the accused at the earliest.”
“The Commission has also requested to conduct the investigation on fast track mode and submit the charge sheet accordingly. The letter issued has the direction to submit the Action Taken Report within two days,” the statement added.
