Since the lockdown police have seized 65 fire arms, 1628 ammunition, 197 grenades, three IEDs and more

Guwahati: Assam Police have been fighting two battles during this pandemic of COVID-19. While hundreds of its security personnel, working on the frontline, were infected with the virus; the men in uniform have been also dealing with the state’s age old militancy issue.

Even with 220 personnel being infected by the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) and over 900 personnel still being quarantined, the Assam Police have not lowered their guard and are still continuing with their anti-insurgency operations across the state, said Director General of Assam Police, Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta on Monday.

The police chief informed that till July 5, at least 220 personnel of the Assam Police were tested positive for the virus while 932 were placed under quarantine. He added that as of Monday, 48 personnel are symptomatic cases while 123 are asymptomatic.

He further added that since the Assam Police is part of the greater society of Assam, it has accepted the challenge with grace like the people of Assam are doing.

“Some Police Personnel becoming COVID-19 positive is no way deterring Assam Police in its service delivery, anti-insurgency operations crime control and general helping hand for the people in distress”, he added.

Since May 25 to July 5, the police has seized 65 fire arms, 1628 ammunition, 197 grenades, three IED, 26 detonators, two kilograms of explosives and at least 16 rocket propelled grenades.

The DGP informed that among this the major recoveries were seven AK56 rifles, two AK47 rifles, at least five 7.65mm pistols, three 8mm pistols, one M4 rifle, at least three MQ81 rifles among others.

Besides, police have been also busy busting anti-national aliments, illicit drugs rackets, etc.

State police have also arrested 4777 persons, detained 35056 vehicles and realized fines worth Rs 4.57 crore for various lockdown violations.

He added that the police department has evolved a system of following up with each of its positive personnel by way of talking to them personally and finding out the well-being and other details of the person. “This process is done on an everyday basis”, he added.

He also thanked state’s chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal and health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for being in constant touch and taking stock of the situation.

Assam police have also prepared 26 bedded sophisticated accommodations along with Medical paraphernalia at Dergaon.
