    COVID-19: Northeast On Edge; 3 States Order Lockdown, No Positive Cases Yet

    In Mizoram, the state government announced partial lockdown across the state till March 29th, 2020 to prevent the spread of coronavirus

    Although no positive cases of coronavirus (COVID-19) infection have been reported from the Northeast as yet, the region has upped its preventive measures to contain the spread of the disease.

    Assam has ordered schools to remain shut till March 31st and asked barber shops, bars, pubs, beauty parlours, coaching centres, wildlife spots, museum, libraries and so on to down their shutters till March 31st.

    In view to contain the outbreak of coronavirus, Assam transport Department has issued an order to prohibit all inter-state passenger vehicles (i.e. contract carriages, stage carriages, taxi cabs, maxi cabs) to and from Assam, to other States and Union Territories up to March 31st, 2020.

    However, it will not be applicable to goods vehicles, personal vehicles, vehicles used for maintaining essential emergency services and vehicles on government duty.

    Fifty per cent of government employees, other than essential services, have been asked to work from home on rotation till March 31st, 2020. All leaves of health department employees have been cancelled.

    Neighbouring Meghalaya has restricted entry of people from other states in view of the coronavirus outbreak.

    All people entering into Meghalaya have been asked to register on the coronavirus monitoring system at www.meghalayaonline.gov.in/covid in addition to undergoing health screening as required by authorities.

    As per the Meghalaya Epidemic Diseases, COVID-19 Regulations 2020 notification, the restricted movement will be allowed from 11 points across the state, six in the Garo Hills region and five in the Khasi Jaintia Hills region.

    On the other hand, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland and Mizoram have become the first states in the region to order a complete lockdown by invoking the Epidemic Diseases Act 1892.

    The lockdown in Mizoram came into effect on March 22nd, 2020 and will continue for a week.

    Arunachal Pradesh government has imposed ‘Complete Safety Restrictions’ in the state from 5 pm on March 23rd, 2020 till the midnight of March 31st, 2020.

    Arunachal Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein appealed the general public not to panic during the lockdown period and to follow the instruction of the state government on preventive measures to avoid the spread of COVID-19.

    The Nagaland government imposed a lockdown from the midnight of March 22nd, 2020 till indefinite period.

    During the lockdown period, all shops and business establishments will remain closed. Pharmacies, petrol pumps, grocery stores, shops selling food grains and vegetables and media offices will remain open.

    Movement of commercial vehicles like buses, taxis, two-wheelers have also been suspended until further order. Only vehicles carrying essential items will be allowed to ply.

    In Mizoram, the state government announced partial lockdown across the state till March 29th, 2020 to prevent the spread of coronavirus.

    Manipur on March 22nd, 2020 sealed inter-state borders with Mizoram, Nagaland and Mizoram banning entry to all passenger vehicles from march 23rd, 2020.

    Manipur government has also ordered the closure of cinema halls, shopping malls, complexes, eateries and tourists spots.
